Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question about EnergiVault that is not answered here, please contact us at [email protected]

Does EnergiVault help power generators?

Yes. EnergiVault helps the national grid become more efficient by using less power when the grid is overloaded.

Can EnergiVault use regular F-Gases?

Yes. EnergiVault can use R404a, R507a, R410, R32……….and more.

Can EnergiVault save me money?

Yes. EnergiVault can be optimised to provide the lowest cost cooling available, by charging its thermal store using off-peak electricity, discharging during peak pricing periods, so benefitting from the price differential between peak and off-peak.

Does the EnergiVault charge use green refrigerants?

The EnergiVault charger can run on most refrigerants, including Ammonia and natural hydrocarbons.

Does the EnergiVault need to be close by?

No. The EnergiVault can be located anywhere, above or below ground, and can feature as multiple units located wherever space allows.

How quickly can I discharge the EnergiVault thermal store?

The thermal store has very high discharge rates, unlike solid ice technologies.  The EnergiVault charger has been designed to have unlimited capacity and can support extremely high thermal loads.

What is the pay-back period?

This inherently depends on the EnergiVault operating mode, but for most customers economic pay-back will be less than three years and half that if used in replacement of new chillers where additional capacity is being installed.

Does EnergiVault contribute to net-zero carbon targets?

Yes. Electricity supplied during peak demand periods (eg early evening) is very carbon intensive, whereas off-peak (e.g. overnight) has low carbon intensity. As EnergiVault systems will generally be used for load-shifting they make a direct contribution to reducing carbon emissions.

Is EnergiVault more expensive than lithium-ion?

EnergiVault is less than half the price of a lithium-ion battery to purchase.

Is the EnergiVault system high maintenance?

No. The system has been designed for minimum maintenance although annual service and 6 monthly testing is recommended.

Can EnergiVault be charged from on-site renewable power?

Yes. Existing PV or wind power can be used to charge the EnergiVault. If none is currently available, we have partnerships with renewable technology providers, and can provide a combined offering.

What is the energy density compared to lithium-ion?

The energy density of EnergiVault is over three times that of lithium-ion batteries, taking up much less room.

What is the life span of an EnergiVault?

The EnergiVault charger has an expected operating life of at least 25 years, whilst for the thermal store life span is virtually endless.

Is it difficult to instal an EnergiVault system?

No. The system has been designed for minimally-invasive installation. Typically, this comprises no more than two connections to the existing refrigeration circuit.

Will the performance degrade over time?

Unlike a lithium-ion electrical storage battery, there is no degradation of operating capacity over its useful life.

Why should I use EnergiVault instead of an electrical battery?

EnergiVault has a much higher return on investment – It costs less to buy, has much lower operating losses, costs less to maintain, and maintains its storage capacity throughout its lifetime.
